Genoa, important Renaissance work by Luca Baudo enters the National Gallery of Liguria

The nucleus of Ligurian Renaissance works in the National Gallery of Liguria is enriched with a masterpiece: an Adoration of the Child by Luca Baudo enters the museum.

New acquisition for the National Gallery of Liguria at Palazzo Spinola in Genoa. Tomorrow, at 4 p.m., the museum will in fact present a masterpiece by painter Luca Baudo (Novara, c. 1460 - Genoa 1509/1510) belonging to the UniCredit Art Collection , which will be added to the precious nucleus of Ligurian Renaissance works pertaining to the Genoese institution under the free loan formula proposed by UniCredit itself.

The work, long known to studies but never exhibited to the public, depicts theAdoration of the Child and is signed “Luce Opus” at a plaque decorating an architectural element. The painting was made toward the end of the last decade of the 15th century by the Novara-born painter Luca Baudo, who, documented in Genoa in 1481, belonged to that large group of Lombard painters who, during the 15th century, found in the rich Ligurian center the ideal place to move to and practice their art.

It is a fundamental piece for the reconstruction of Baudo’s production during his maturity, with a language deeply influenced by the manner of Vincenzo Foppa. The panel, nearly two and a half meters high and a little less than a meter wide, probably constituted the central compartment of a dispersed triptych made to adorn the altar of a Genoese or at least Ligurian sacred building. Having transited on the Parisian antiques market, it now belongs to the UniCredit Art Collection, which has identified the National Gallery of Liguria, through the instrument of loan, as a suitable venue for re-establishing a dialogue between the work and its artistic context of origin, of which Baudo was, along with painters such as Giovanni Mazone, Carlo Braccesco and Ludovico Brea, one of the main protagonists.
