Ferrara, completed the restoration of the Madonna and Child by Antonio Rossellino

Restoration of Antonio Rossellino's Madonna and Child presented in Ferrara: the 1461 sculpture returns to the Cathedral Museum after more than a year of work.

In Ferrara , the restoration of Antonio Rossellino ’s Madonna and Child (1461) was unveiled yesterday afternoon in the Hall of Months of the Schifanoia Museum in the presence of a large audience that listened to the outcome of the interventions, which lasted more than a year and were the result of a fruitful collaboration between public and private entities in the city. The public will be able to admire the work at the Cathedral Museum starting today, Tuesday, Jan. 23, in a renewed display on the museum’s first floor, where Antonio Rossellino’s Madonna and Child will return alongside four other works originally part of Francesco Sacrati’s monument.

The restoration of the work, promoted in 2022 by the museum’s then director Giovanni Sassu, was carried out by Fabio Bevilacqua, an expert in the restoration of lithoid materials, under the supervision of the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio, and made possible thanks to funding from the Ferrara Ambassador Club, Ferrariae Decus ETS, Soroptimist International Club, Associazione Italiana Sommelier - Ferrara Delegation, Fidapa BPW - Ferrara section, and Amici dei Musei e Monumenti Ferraresi. The sculpture was originally kept in the church of San Domenico, acquired by the Ministry of the Interior to the Fondo Edifici di Culto (F.E.C.) and in storage since 2014 at the Cathedral Museum.

After greetings by Piergiorgio Borasio, exponent of the Ferrara Associations for the Cultural Heritage of the City, Romeo Pio Cristofori, curator of the Civic Museums of Ancient Art of Ferrara, spoke. The floor then went to two of the most renowned Italian scholars of Renaissance sculpture: Aldo Galli, who spoke about the originality of sculpture in Ferrara in the 15th century, and Paolo Parmiggiani, who delved into the early activity of Antonio Rossellino in the Este capital. Closing the afternoon was Fabio Bevilacqua, who presented the restoration work carried out.

“This is a shared restoration, with a view to enhancing the city’s treasures,” said Marco Gulinelli, councillor for Culture in Ferrara. “An intervention that is the result of the cooperation, participation and collaboration, as well as the sharing between the Prefecture, the Municipality of Ferrara and the Cathedral Museum, of Ferrara’s associations, strongly united in the protection project started several years ago.”

“At last, thanks to the synergistic work between the public and private sectors, the community will once again be able to have this sculpture, set up in the Cathedral Museum,” says Prefect Massimo Marchesiello. “The hope is that once the church of St. Dominic is restored, the work will be relocated to its original location.”

The Cathedral Museum can be visited Tuesday through Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. (closed Mondays). For reservations: www.comune.fe.it/prenotazionemusei.
